Daniel Torres was born and raised in McAllen, Texas. Following in his older siblings’ footsteps, he left McAllen in 1997 to attend the University of Texas at Austin and was elected president of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society in his second semester. He graduated a semester early in Dec. 2000 with a major in Philosophy and a minor in English. During college, Daniel worked at major corporate hotels as well as a historic luxury hotel on 6th Street in Austin, where he learned important skills in customer service.
In August of 2001, Daniel moved to San Antonio to attend St. Mary’s University School of Law, once again following in his older siblings’ footsteps. Daniel made the Dean’s List in three out of his six semesters. As a second-year law student, he studied abroad at the University of Innsbruck in Austria, Europe, where he studied comparative constitutional law taught by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. As a third-year law student, he clerked for the Hon. Richard Schmidt at the United States Federal Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of Texas, Corpus Christi Division. His law school article, Inter Arma Silent Leges: An Examination of the
Legal Rights of Enemy Combatants in the Global War on Terror, was published by the Georgia Tech University’s Journal of Philosophy, Science, and Law in 2003. He graduated in May 2004 and took the bar exam in June.
While awaiting his bar results, Daniel accepted a job offer at Hodge & James in Harlingen, working on insurance defense and construction defect cases. After being sworn in to the Texas Bar in November 2004, Daniel was recruited by Wright & Greenhill, P.C., in downtown Austin, Texas, where he was trained by former Texas State Representative T.B. Wright in handling insurance defense trials and appeals. In 2008, Daniel began doing Plaintiff’s work and was hired by the former President of the State Bar of Texas, Richard Pena, to lead the civil litigation section of his Austin law firm.
While driving from McAllen to Austin one afternoon, a billboard of a lawyer wearing a suit and boxing gloves caught Daniel’s attention. Seeking to return to the Valley after living in Austin for so many years, Daniel applied for and accepted a position at the Law Offices of Javier Villarreal on June 4, 2012. On his first day on the job, he reported to the Cameron County Courthouse tosecond-chair a trial by Javier Villarreal.
Daniel enjoys cooking indoors and outdoors, bowling, watching the Texas Longhorns, family time, travel, and golfs occasionally. He speaks Spanish fluently, conversational French, and studies German. His newest endeavor is writing articles about himself in the third person.
