Bio: Ruby Marie Cerrillo was born and raised in Brownsville, Texas, and is a recent 2026 graduate of Porter Early College High School. As a first-generation college student, Ruby is passionate about history, law, and advocacy. Her interest in law grew from her natural curiosity, willingness to ask questions, and desire to stand up for what she believes is right. Her love of history also played an important role in shaping her aspirations. Through National History Day, she studied the Sleepy Lagoon case, which deepened her interest in the relationship between history, law, and justice. Her experience competing as a defense attorney in Mock Trial further confirmed her desire to pursue a career in law.
Ruby will attend The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, where she will major in History and minor in Legal Studies. She is also excited to begin her journey with the Honors College through the pre-law track as she works toward earning her Juris Doctor and becoming an attorney.
Ruby hopes to combine her background, education, and passion for advocacy to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. She hopes to create opportunities for herself and her family while becoming an attorney who uses her voice and knowledge to advocate for those whose voices deserve to be heard.
